Looking for work in commercials?
Posted by Simona
Commercials are made by advertising agencies, radio and television stations, and production houses. They are also, though less frequently, produced by the advertisers themselves. Your goal is to land any commercial work that's available.
Your search for that work will lead you to the realization that, yes. More time is spent looking for commercial work than working in commercials.
Once you make up your mind to try acting in commercials, set a reasonable time frame in which to start finding jobs. Many New York and Los Angeles actors spend several years before they taste success, but it shouldn't take that long if you stay close to home. Nevertheless, unless you're among the lucky few, lightning won't strike immediately. It's going to take some time before you see results. So relax and enjoy it call it paying your dues.
The secret is to practice the three P's.
Be persistent
Be patient
And keep your attitude positive
Sounds easy, doesn't It? Well it won't after several rejections. Don't let it get you down, your turn will come.
Some worry is normal. Rejection is negative, and actors hate it. It's impossible not to get discouraged. But it's Imperative not to give in to those negative feelings or you'll defeat yourself. And never let those feelings show as you beat the bushes for work. If you do, the decision makers won't want anything to do with you. Remember, everybody loves a winner, so look and act like one whether you're winning or not.
The most important tip in this article may just be, as a popular deodorant commercial put it, ' 'Never let 'em see you sweat."
If you look nervous and desperate for work, you probably won't get it.
The job will go to an actor who at least appears relaxed. Of course, it will help if you have a financial cushion or a flexible or part-time job to make money less of a problem. In any case, your attitude should always be, I'll give it my best shot; after all, what have I got to lose.
