THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING THE RIGHT HEADSHOT
  Share

Right or wrong, the first impression is a lasting impression, right? Have you ever met someone for the first time and as you got to know them it appeared they look different later on? Well, if you are interested to know, your headshot can have the same effect.

What is a headshot? No, it is not what you see in the word - a shot to the head. It is a term used in the world of television, modeling, and photography to initiate a "real" or "basic" look.

Those of us interested to live the life of a superstar or television personality know the importance of a headshot. Depending on which entertainment or TV career one is seeking, a type of headshot
- Commercial, Industrial, Glamour, or Black & White - determines your entertaining job type. As mentioned earlier, the headshot is a "real" or "basic" picture. It is up close and personal and the photographer must capture your best looking feature which reflects who you are, the style of your career, and clarity of what type of talent you will provide on screen or in print.

Please note, the picture you present to a Casting Director or Producer is a feature of your resume and can make the profound decision on whether you will be one of the hundreds of thousand models, actors, or entertainers chosen for that special part.

The importance of having the right headshot is determined by the right lighting, distinguished angle, suitable hairstyle, correct facial structuring (for example, eyebrow shape), and perfect makeup. The point is to look yourself at your best. This is because, suppose you submit your headshot to a producer or casting director and you are chosen and requested to go to a modeling audition or reality TV casting. If your headshot looks different from your actual appearance, then your headshot would be ineffective. In comparison, that first appearance from a person's initial contact begins to change as you get to know that person.

It is very important to choose the right photographer that specializes in headshots. This is imperative because they will coach you appropriately on the poses for each headshot type. If you are young, it is obvious your features will change; therefore, your portfolio may include different poses. In addition, if you are seeking different types of careers, such as modeling, a dance and music job, or an acting job, your portfolio should be ready with different types or headshot style and poses. Be sure the photographer knows exactly what you will be submitting the headshots for and please take criticism constructively.
